UTI Q&A

What is a urinary tract infection (UTI)?

A urinary tract infection occurs when bacteria enter any part of your urinary system, causing inflammation and other uncomfortable side effects. The urinary system includes the bladder, ureters, kidney, and urethra.

UTIs affect people of all ages and genders, but they’re prevalent in women. Women have shorter urethras, so it’s easier for bacteria to make its way from the anus into the urinary system.

What are the symptoms of a UTI?

UTI symptoms include:

  • A strong urge to urinate that doesn’t go away
  • A burning sensation when urinating
  • Urinating often
  • Strong-smelling urine
  • Urine that’s red, brown, or bright pink
  • Cloudy urine

As the infection spreads to other parts of the urinary system, you might experience pelvic pain.

When should I schedule a telehealth urgent care visit for a UTI?

Make a telehealth appointment at Dovecare  if you develop symptoms of a UTI. Even though symptoms are typically mild at first, without treatment, the infection can spread to other parts of your urinary system, increasing your risk of more severe complications.

How is a UTI diagnosed?

Your Dovecare  provider reviews your medical records, asks about your symptoms, and completes a telehealth encounter. They may also have you visit a nearby lab or clinic to complete several tests, including:

Urinalysis

Urinalysis analyzes a sample of your urine to check for red blood cells, white blood cells, and bacteria. Higher-than-average bacteria levels indicate a UTI and are crucial in guiding treatment.

Urine culture

A urine culture helps determine what type of bacteria is responsible for your UTI. This information makes selecting an antibiotic that will most benefit you easier.

Ultrasound

Your dovecare provider might recommend an ultrasound if you regularly experience UTIs. An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to provide real-time images of your urinary system. It helps them identify structural abnormalities that increase your risk of a UTI.

How is a UTI treated?

The Dovecare provider treats UTIs using a  patient-centered approach. Most mild urinary tract infections improve with oral antibiotics, like trimethoprim and cephalexin.

However, if you experience frequent UTIs, you might benefit from taking low-dose antibiotics for several months. Similarly, your provider might prescribe single-dose antibiotics after sex if your UTIs are caused by sexual activity.
